Cryptology
The science of enciphering a message, deciphering a message and analyzing a message of unknown encipherment. The cryptologic art can be separated into classical and modern. Classical encryption mangles and/or modifies the original text message (plaintext) to an new text message. The plaintext and enciphered text are both text messages. Modern cryptology uses number theory to encipher a text message into a digital message. Roughly, classical encryption ended in the 1970’s.
